The Tien VO MD Grant was born from a deeply personal conviction: that financial circumstances should never determine a student’s future. Dr. Vo’s own journey — from a young immigrant navigating an unfamiliar educational system to a physician leading one of Imperial County’s largest healthcare organizations — taught him that potential exists everywhere, often in the most unexpected places.

Unlike traditional scholarships that rely heavily on GPA thresholds, this grant takes a different approach. By eliminating minimum GPA requirements, the program acknowledges that academic transcripts tell only part of a student’s story. Life circumstances, family responsibilities, health challenges, and systemic inequities all influence academic performance in ways that numbers alone cannot capture.

Through this grant, Dr. Vo extends the same philosophy that guides his medical practice: meet people where they are, understand their unique circumstances, and provide the support they need to thrive.
